This Full Moon takes place in Shravana, a deeply spiritual Nakshatra. This year, on this very Full Moon called Guru Purnima, which honours the Guru, the Moon receives the aspect of an exalted Jupiter/Guru, the planet governing wisdom and teaching. Shravana means “hearing,” and its symbol is the ear. Of all the senses, “hearing” is the one most closely tied to Guru, because true teaching is not only about information passing from one mind to another. It is connected to receiving: being still, open, and actually taking something in.
Shravana holds another, hidden meaning. It is not only about “hearing what is said,” but also “hearing what is not said.” The teaching that arises from the space between words. This is the very essence of Dakshinamurthi — the form of Shiva who, as the eternal Guru, teaches through silence. That silence itself is the teaching. The deepest wisdom, which is the very nature of the true Self, cannot truly be conveyed through words; it can only be recognised within stillness.
On this day devoted to the Guru, there is something worth holding in our hearts: the most important things we learn, from our teachers, from texts, or from life itself, are sometimes not found in what was clearly explained. They can also be found in what we come to understand ourselves, within silence. And so perhaps this Full Moon is inviting us, more than seeking further words, explanations, or things to lean on, simply to hold the willingness to listen to our teachers, and to the silence that lies beneath everything they have already given us.
